Scholarship Program,
Kenya

A longtime goal of Gary's Fund has been to find  a scholarship program which could especially benefit  girls who had attended one of our schools and wished to attain a higher education.  In discussion with our partner in Kenya, Africa Exchange, we learned that they have begun a scholarship program, AFEX,  very closely aligned with our goals. Input from the schools, and a careful vetting process are used select those exceptional students with the drive, desire and support to continue forward with their education and to finish what they start.  None of the girls we would support could possibly dream of attending higher level grade school, technical or vocational school or college without a scholarship.

Girls in Kenya can face powerful impediments to achieving higher education including extreme poverty, the need to leave school early for young marriages, to help at home and for deeply imbedded cultural reasons.

We are happy to announce the 1st two girls who will attend a 2 year Technical/Vocational Training program (TVET) and a 4 year University, respectively, due to a donation by Gary's fund ensuring their scholarships. They are pictured above with their delighted mothers.

Gary's Fund proposed to provide the funding for scholarships for a total of 3 girls who attend one of our 3 Kenyan schools.  These scholarships will allow these exceptional students to progress to either "senior secondary" (grades 10-12), Technical/Vocational Training (TVET), or University.  It is very important to us to offer these opportunities especially to the girls who are benefitting from our school projects.

The scholarship costs are:

  • $1,500/year  for 4 years for a total of $6,000 for a 4 year scholarship for 1 student at University.

  • $1,500/year for 2 years for a total of $3,000 for a 2 year scholarship at TVET.

This year the scholarship program selected 2 girls who attended Sisit school (where our kindergarten is located).  Cherop Sheila Siwareng and Norah Chelimo Yoto are now enrolled in Chesta Teachers Training College and Kenya Medical Training College, respectively.   Senior secondary students were not considered for this year due to a countrywide shuffling of grade levels, making selection difficult.  Most girls cannot continue on to senior secondary as they must go to boarding schools which are difficult or impossible for their families to afford. Additionally they are competing with  strong cultural preferences for boys in education.  Selections for students from those senior secondary grade levels can resume next year.
